Brian Griffiths (b. 1968) lives and works in Colchester and London. Recent solo exhibitions include: Taking Sides, Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo (2019); No No to Knock-Knocks, Blain|Southern, London (2018); BILL MURRAY: a story of distance, size and sincerity, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2015). Recent group exhibitions include: Image Drum, Royal Academy of Arts, London (2019); Voyage, Bergamin & Gomide, São Paulo (2017); Folk Devil, David Zwirner, New York (2013).

Cherry Smyth in conversation with the artist J.A. Nicholls on her new work in the exhibition On touch.

Cherry Smyth is a critic, curator, poet and novelist. She co-curated Limber: spatial painting practices with Jost Munster at the Herbert Read Gallery 2013. Her catalogue essays include Sophy Rickett, Elizabeth Magill, Orla Barry, Zineb Sedira, Brigid McLeer, Salla Tykka, Flora Parrott, Louisa Fairclough and Dirk Braeckman, among others.

She has published four poetry collections and one novel. She was appointed a Royal Literary Fellow 2014-2016. She writes regularly for Art Monthly.

We are delighted to announce that Nicola Dale will perform during the opening of ‘On touch’ on Thursday 17th March 2022.

‘Retouch’ is a new performance responding to the portraits in J.A. Nicholls’ solo show, ‘On touch’ at Bobinska Brownlee, London. Calling attention to the particularities of Nicholls’ technique, Nicola Dale will present her own face as canvas, medium and mirror in order to explore performativity and portraiture, gesture and expression.

Nicola Dale works across sculpture, performance, image and text. Recent highlights include exhibitions, commissions and/or performances for: Begehungen Festival, Chemnitz; Proforma, Salford; The Grundy, Blackpool; Echo Echo, Derry; Backlit, Nottingham; Corte Super Nova, Venice; Leeds Arts University; The Portico, Manchester; International 3, Salford; MOSTYN, Wales; Turner Contemporary, Margate; Open Eye, Liverpool and The Whitworth, Manchester. Trash Cameo walkshop with Louise Ashcroft Wednesday 5th May, 2021 7 - 8 pm. Join artist Louise Ashcroft for a walk around Islington, during which participants will psychically refurbish trash, fragments and overlooked details of the urban environment which will be analysed closely as a methodology for developing characters and narrative. Bring face masks if required, and keep 1m apart. Please bring weather appropriate clothing and a note book or phone to make notes on. Bring your favourite drink/snack or pocket money to buy refreshments from a newsagents en route. Suitable for all ages. Meet outside Essex Road rail station, ends wherever we end up.
